Over the years we at PennDOT have received numerous requests to improve the quality and safety of Traffic Route 21 (S.R. 0021) between Waynesburg and Uniontown. In response to this demand we are undertaking the Route 21 Corridor Improvement Project. This major project will rebuild the highway in a series of small sections.
Replacement of the Masontown Bridge, which carries Route 21 over the Monongahela River and the Norfolk Southern Railroad, is the first of the series of projects to be implemented.
The existing 11-span, 2-lane structure will be totally replaced with a new bridge. Construction will be staged in such a manner that the existing bridge will remain open to traffic; thus, detours will not be required.
Section A20 begins at a point west of the Masontown Interchange, picking up where the Masontown Bridge Project ends, and extends east to the intersection of Route 166 near Sweet Pea's Food Mart. Major improvements within this section include the Masontown Interchange and the structure near the former Lardin House Inn. This project has been deferred to a later and more appropriate time in light of the recent work that was done in the years 2000 and 2001 by Marsolino Construction Company of Uniontown, Pennsylvania. When the A20 project is brought back on line it will be in the Preliminary Engineering Phase, which will establish horizontal and vertical geometry and generally determine required right of way limits for an Environmental Study.
Section C10 begins at the intersection of Route 166 near Sweet Pea's Food Mart and extends east to the intersection of S&T Drive, which is located west of Revere and adjacent to the old S&T Construction Company complex. The project has been deferred to a later date based on funding availability.
Section H10 project initially had limits that began at the end of section C10 project near the intersection of Route 21 and S&T Drive, west of Revere, and proceeded east on Route 21 to the project terminus at Route 40. However, based on funding constraints, PennDOT has determined the preliminary efforts will now focus only on the area a 1.4 mile corridor from just west of Thompson’s Crossroads to the bridge over Route 119 near Uniontown Mall. This project will be known as SR 0021 Section J10.
